What to Have in Your Gym Bag

Students training BJJ

If you’re new to Jiu Jitsu, or even if you’ve been training for awhile, you might be wondering what sort of stuff you should bring with you to the training hall. Nobody likes to be caught without their gear, so here are some suggestions:

Training Clothes

Some people change at home, but most opt to change at the training hall. We have changing rooms for this purpose. That way you don’t need to worry about gassing up your car or stopping at Wegmans in your uniform. If it’s a Gi day, make sure you have a freshly washed uniform and belt with you. If it’s No-Gi, then you’ll need your spats and rash guard.

Hygiene

With all the contact we do in training, having good hygiene is a must. You should have some hand sanitizer (we have it at RPMA, but it’s a good idea to bring your own.) Bring a stick of deodorant so you can freshen yourself up. If you’re able to brush your teeth before leaving for the training hall, do so. If not, bring mouthwash or a tube of toothpaste and brush so you can do so at the training hall.

Gear

Make sure you have all the gear you could possibly need, even if you don’t really think you’ll need it. For example, never assume there won’t be rolling after class. Always have your mouth guard and head gear, if you choose to use it (we suggest wearing them for rolling.) Have any type of supports (ankles, wrist, etc.) that you think you may need. Some people also bring their own athletic tape.

Hydration

We suggest you bring water, but sports drinks are also common. It’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day. Students have actually gotten very sick from dehydration, especially during the warmer months.

Notebook

We strongly encourage students to bring a notebook with them to class. You’ll be learning a lot of new information, and taking notes can greatly help you retain the things you learn in class. There’s a surprising amount of vocabulary, techniques with multiple steps, and key points the instructor may expect you to know. You’ll also want to make note of specific corrections given to you, or epiphanies you had while training.

Flip Flops

Finally, always have flip flops with you- even when visiting another gym. Flip flops are worn throughout all the common areas and the bathroom. Simply slip them off when entering the mat or other training areas. You can leave these in the changing rooms if you choose.

As you get more familiar with your routine, you’ll come up with other things that work best for you. What do you usually bring in your bag? Let us know in the comments!
