It isn’t easy finding a good gym or training hall. Shopping around for the right one is certainly encouraged. But how do you know when a school is good? Here are some tips for finding the perfect school! And guess what? It takes more than a quick “BJJ near me” search on google.
Don’t Automatically Train Where Your Friends or Family Are
Word of mouth is the main marketing tactic for martial arts schools. However, people have different needs. For example, perhaps your goal is to get in shape while learning some self defense. Going to your cousin’s Tai Chi class won’t help you. Put your own goals first. Certainly, checking out the Tai Chi school is fine, but make sure you have fully thought about what you want to get out of your training.
BJJ Near Me: Location Matters
We always say at RPMA “the secret to mastering Jiu Jitsu is coming to class.” When looking for a school, make sure it is convenient enough for you to drive there two to three times a week. If you are happy driving thirty minutes to train, that’s great! We’ve had people drive close to an hour to train with us. Yet, driving can also be a pain. Most adult / older kids classes are also right during rush hour. Factor in location. If you know driving there will be a pain, it might be best to pass it up.
Don’t Go By Price Alone
Martial arts, especially Jiu Jitsu, are expensive. However, be leery of very cheap martial arts. Sometimes that just means the owner is running it as a hobby school. Other times it means you will get hit with hidden fees. They will also sometimes throw in stipulations like restricting how often you can train. While price is certainly a factor, don’t let it be the main determinant for choosing a training hall.
